Antique Souvenir Postcard Silks Doily, circa 1917, French Lace Souvenir Handkerchief, AT FAULT
This Antique Souvenir Postcard Silks Doily, circa 1917, is a remarkable piece that has been preserved from a difficult time. It was part of a collection of vintage and antique linens, and its unique material is made from upcycled woven silk postcards from World War 1. Contrasting with the delicate handiwork of the lace and embroidery surrounding it, the postcard pieces display images of French cities being destroyed by fire. On four of the silks, two of which are identical, you can see landmarks from the cities of St Quintin, Chauny, and Nancy. The center of the doily features a beautifully hand embroidered bouquet of flowers, with the words "Souvenir from France" carefully stitched along the bottom and side. Each corner is adorned with a satin bow, adding to the overall elegance of this piece.
The postcard silk would have been mounted in card sleeves to create greeting cards. Silks as detailed as these would have been machine woven.
The piece is damaged by moisture that caused the dye from the embroidery thread and the silks to run. There is a slightly darkish stain to the right side of the embroidered square, but overall the lace work is in terrific shape for its age. The panel with the central embroidery is pulling away from its lace frame. Please examine all the pictures and close ups for the colour bleeding and damage.
The piece measures 21 inches square.
This product is a ideal present for those interested in collecting World War 1 memorabilia.
