This popular style of Chinese wicker sewing basket dates from the 1930s, but this particular item has had some more recent repairs to the glass and stone beadwork on the lid. The basket itself is in good vintage condition and consists of a finely woven exterior with a interior woven mat lining on both the lid and base. There is a little handle at the centre of the lid, but it is attached quite lightly and should not be used to pull open the two halves of the basket.
CONDITION:
As you can see in the interior lid, the beads are new additions to the basket. Most likely the older beads fell off with age. The replacement beads seem to consist of pink glass beads and orange polished stone beads that may be carnelian stones. The string looks like a twisted cotton. On the side of the interior woven mat lining is a small ripple where the mat is perhaps a little too large for the area. There are also remnants of a label that was once attached to the side of the basket. The piece that remains has the word “birthday” written on it in old cursive style. Perhaps this was once given to someone for their birthday?
The alterations and faults on this piece are accounted for in the price.
