Retro Advertising Posters, Franz Johnston Inspired Prints, circa 1970s, PAIR, LIGHT DAMAGE to both
These Retro Advertising Posters, inspired by the work of Franz Johnston, feature images on pressboard and may have been created by the advertising company as a sample of their printing quality in the 1970s. While they have some light damage, the distinct thick layers of paint give them a unique look. At some point, the pieces were framed and their backs show traces of being once mounted. The smaller print is an interpretation of Johnston's "Promise of Spring" and the larger one is a more vibrant take on "Row of Poplars", both featuring Johnston's signature on the lower left corner.
CONDITION of “Promise of Spring” (16 inches X 12 inches) Rendering:
The smaller piece shows parts of the words “Canadian Advertising Sign Co.” along the bottom, which is obscured by the lower edge of the frame. The print was cut down from its original size.
There are blemishes on the print surface that are noticeable close up. The blemishes include faint stains, smudges of the paint, and small dents. These are shown in the pictures.
CONDITION of “Row of Poplars” (18 inches X 14 inches) Rendering:
There are some dents and scratches on this piece as shown in the supporting pictures. The piece was also cut down to fit a frame at one point and has a narrow unprinted margin at top and bottom. The backing board has some stains (shown in pictures).
These pieces are sold as a pair. They would look wonderful in a retro cottage or cabin.
