This painting of Galileo Galilei was created by Antoine Sebastien Falardeau (1822-1889),otherwise know as “Le Chevalier Falardeau”. Falardeau was a sign painter in Quebec who was sent to Italy in the 1840s by his patron where he became a highly skilled portrait artist and copyist of famous paintings. This painting is such a copy of Justus Sustermans’ painting.
This portrait is unframed and signed on the back: “Galili/ Le Chevalier Falardeau/ d’apres Sustermans/ Florence 1860” it is painted in oil on convex pressboard.
The piece would have once been mounted in a convex glass frame.
There are small specks of damage to the surface when viewed up close. Also, ther is a bit of wear at the edges of the board. (Please review the pictures).
