This richly-coloured crazy quilt sampler is make from old ties, needlepoint, fabric and ribbon. The stitching serves to demonstrate a variety of different embroidery patterns holding together the the segments of fabric from neckties. The border is made from a beautiful turquoise and blue paisley patterned wool edging.
The top piece was originally made in the 1930s from a family’s scraps of clothing. The border and backing may have been added or replaced what was originally there in the 20th Century to turn it into a wall hanging. Over the years, modifications and repairs were performed on the piece to suit its use and improve its condition.
The piece is 15.5 inches by 15.5 inches with a drop length of and additional 4 inches when hung from the gold cord.
Along the bottom, it feels like there is some stiff steel wire to help keep the piece straight when hung. Along the top is some pressed card and perhaps wood to keep that edge relatively straight.
There is some light staining on at least one of the segments of fabric. This pink segment is shown in the photos. Some of the stitching is loose in places, but it is overall still a functional piece of wall art, great for a door or small space.
